In today’s digital era, summaries and online quizzes are readily available whenever we’re worried or curious about a symptom or health trait. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for everything - and for good reason. Autism is a great example of a condition that can’t be understood through a quick online or one-size-fits-all evaluation. Every autism assessment is different per individual.

Autism Assessments
Testing for autism includes a variety of validated assessments designed to determine if the behaviors and symptoms of an individual meet the diagnostic criteria for autism. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Illnesses, or DSM-5, is the specific manual which has the detailed information clinicians use to make a diagnosis. Evaluations can be done either in-person or virtually, depending on provider availability and your location; both options are highly accurate and effective.

At Positive Development, we provide diagnostics and tailored therapy. Our goal is to enhance harmony at home while supporting both you and your child as a team through the entire journey of autism, from the start all the way to teenage years.

Neurodivergent Defined
Neurodivergent is a popular umbrella term used to describe individuals whose brains develop(ed) or function differently than what’s considered to be neurotypical. This is in reference to a person whose strengths and challenges aren’t caused by any differences in how their brain works. Neurodivergent is not a medical term, but a socially respectable term used instead of “abnormal” or “different”, in the same way neurotypical is used instead of “typical” or “normal”. Neurodivergent is inclusive of many diagnoses but can also include conditions that have not yet been identified. There is no broad test for neurodivergence - it's simply a description that is more positive and accepting, and less about labeling differences.

If your child is in need of an evaluation to determine whether or not they have autism, we offer in-person and virtual evaluations, depending on location. You can read more about the diagnostic process here.
